Liverpool’s prospects of signing Alexander Isak from Newcastle have received a major boost with the news that a deal has been struck to take Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich.

Isak has been publicly pushing for a move to Liverpool in recent days, but with the Anfield club having spent lavishly this summer, including €90 million to sign centre-forward Hugo Ekitike, sales are required before the Swede’s dream can become a reality.

Newcastle want a British-record transfer fee for their star player, but that could be partly funded by Luis Diaz’s departure.

The Colombia international is unhappy at Liverpool, and the door has now been unlocked for him to leave and join the Bundesliga champions. According to FootMercato, an agreement over a transfer fee has finally been reached.

Transfer insider Santi Aouna has revealed: “Bayern Munich and Liverpool are very close to reaching a verbal agreement for Luis Diaz. The deal is expected to be worth around €75m.

“Bayern are increasingly confident that the transfer will be completed in the coming days.”

More great work from Richard Hughes

Such a deal represents another great win for sporting director Richard Hughes, who is enjoying a spectacular first summer in his job.

Luis Diaz was signed in January 2022 from Porto for €53m, yet Liverpool stand to make at least €22m on the player.

This is all the more remarkable given that the 28-year-old has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €50m.

What’s happening with Isak?

There is no guarantee that Liverpool will be able to land Isak even if they sell Luis Diaz.

Newcastle have been steadfast in their insistence that the 25-year-old striker will not be sold. Instead, they are seeking to offer him a new contract, although manager Eddie Howe has admitted that there are issues behind the scenes that have concerned him for some time.

Isak is not a like-for-like replacement for Diaz, either. Instead, there have been reports that Liverpool could move for Real Madrid winger Rodrygo, who is unlikely to see much game time under Xabi Alonso at the Bernabeu due to a change of system.

Lyon winger Malick Fofana is another player who has been linked with a potential move to Anfield should Liverpool need to replace Luis Diaz, as looks increasingly probable.
