Liverpool threaten to DERAIL Gyokeres to Arsenal with shock HIJACK
Viktor Gyokeres' move to Arsenal is thought to be imminent, but Liverpool are ready to get involved in this saga by surprisingly targeting Sporting CP's replacement for the Swede.
The Gunners managed to make a major breakthrough in the talks for Gyokeres over the weekend, and an agreement to sign the 27-year-old now appears to be merely a matter of time.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the last details that have to be ironed out pertain to the payment structure, with Sporting demanding that at least €70 million of the transfer fee be guaranteed and the rest attainable via bonuses.
However, it is not believed that this will jeopardise this move as Gyokeres is pushing hard for Sporting to accept Arsenal's offer. Indeed, the prolific No.9 has even forfeited €2m of his salary to help force through the move.
Meanwhile, Sporting are trying to line up a replacement for Gyokeres, and their top target for the position is Almeria striker Luis Javier Suarez. However, somewhat surprisingly, he has also attracted the attention of Premier League champions Liverpool.
Liverpool want another Luis Suarez
At least that is according to A Bola, which reports that a host of European and English giants have taken a liking to the 27-year-old, who is coming off a 31-goal season in the Spanish second tier.
Man Utd, too, are named among Suarez's suitors, but it is claimed that Sporting have an advantage over all the others as they are the only club to have actually opened talks so far.
At present, Sporting are unwilling to match Almeria's inflated €25 million asking price, but the situation is expected to be resolved once the sale of Gyokeres is completed.
Still, the Lisbon giants have to be mindful of the interest Suarez is fielding from elsewhere. Liverpool, of course, are currently having to contend with the emotional as well as sporting implications of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.
Liverpool were looking to sign a marquee forward heading into the summer, but the heartbreaking events of last week now mean that the Anfield club may have to bring in two new strikers. Luis Suarez, who is not related to the former Reds favourite by the same name, could be a cost-effective reinforcement.
