Arsenal believe their summer transfer for Martin Zubimendi is ‘done and signed’ according to David Ornstein, despite speculation that Real Madrid could hijack their deal for the Real Sociedad midfielder.

Zubimendi was confirmed by many as having agreed to join Arsenal since January but Real Sociedad’s desire to close the deal in July for accounting reasons has led to reports that the transfer may still have room to collapse.

Reports in Spain this week claimed that Zubimendi was holding out on an approach from Real Madrid before formally deciding his future but Arsenal appear to be relaxed over the deal.

Ornstein confirmed via The Athletic that Zubimendi is expected to link up with Arsenal for the start of pre-season once the deal has been ratified in July.

The Athletic’s Mario Cortegana also added that Real had not pursue or actively work on recruiting Zubimendi despite the club’s appreciation for the 26-year-old.

With Arsenal having agreed to pay Zubimendi’s €60 million release clause, it is widely accepted that the Spaniard will become their first signing of the summer when the deal is formally announced next month.

Romano weighs in on Zubimendi deal

Ornstein’s report echoes what Fabrizio Romano reported amid the fresh Real links, with the transfer guru

“I absolutely respect all the sources on the story because until the deals are official, you can try until the very end,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.

“My understanding is that Zubimendi has agreed on absolutely everything to become an Arsenal player. He wanted to wait to respect the formal steps and Real Sociedad until the very end, he didn’t want to sign a contract before the end of the season but the deal is agreed, they have already exchanged everything in terms of documents.

“It’s just about the formal steps and then Zubimendi will be an Arsenal player. If Real Madrid are able to change this story while the documents are ready, you can never say never in football. But Arsenal are convinced that he will be their player this summer.”
