Real Madrid are looking to employ the help of Manchester United in their pursuit of Benfica left-back Alvaro Carreras, according to Spanish media.

The 22-year-old has been a brilliant signing for the Portuguese giants after initially joining the club on loan in January 2024. His stay was made permanent in the summer, and Carreras has only gone from strength to strength.

In late 2024, the young left-back was heavily linked with a return to Man Utd as they were desperately scrambling for a player in his position. However, despite the Spaniard being a cheaper option, they ultimately decided to sign Patrick Dorgu in January instead.

Man Utd are no longer in the market for a left-back now, but their €18 million buy-back clause for Carreras could still come in handy. Or at least that is what Real Madrid believe.

According to AS, Los Blancos have identified Carreras as a priority target for the summer transfer window, but the problem that they face is that Benfica are unwilling to sell him after just 18 months.

Real Madrid make Man Utd request

The Spanish outlet claims that Benfica are asking for around €60m for the Spaniard, who actually spent time in Real Madrid's youth system. As far as the LaLiga giants are concerned, this is way too expensive.

The report states that Real Madrid want Man Utd to act as a 'bridge' by activating their buy-back clause for Carreras. The thinking goes that Man Utd will settle for a lower fee to sell him, seeing as though they don't actually need him.

Madrid 'estimate' that it would require only €35m to get Man Utd to agree to such a deal, believing it to be a win-win situation for everyone involved except Benfica, naturally.

After the 'fiasco' that was their pursuit of Alphonso Davies, Real Madrid initially decided not to pursue a left-back. However, Ferland Mendy's constant injury problems have made the signing of a new left-sided full-back a priority.

Miguel Gutierrez, another former Real Madrid youngster, has been touted as a potential option as well, but the report states that he has been overtaken by Carreras due to Girona's poor season, which has affected his performances.
