Rodri has blossomed into one of the best defensive midfielders in world football at Manchester City, and the English and European champions have no intention of seeing him leave…

Rodri has seen off all comers since joining City from Atletico Madrid for €70 million in the summer of 2019, with Kalvin Phillips the latest to discover there is no budging the Spaniard from Pep Guardiola's midfield.

Bayern Munich were previously linked with a move for Rodri, while there are very few clubs in the world who could afford to meet the €82.3m he is now valued at by FootballTransfers' in-house algorithm.

That's not to say the 49-time Spain international doesn't have plenty of admirers, but City have now moved to bolt one of their team captains down to a long-term deal.

Rodri 'for life'

"Manchester City want to reward Rodri with a massive pay hike in a bid to keep the Spanish midfielder at the Etihad for life," reports The Mirror's Simon Mullock.

"Pep Guardiola believes the 27-year-old has developed into his most important player over the last 12 months. And City are ready to hand the man who scored the winning goal in last season's Champions League final with a new deal that will take his basic wage to £300,000-a-week."

Rodri is currently on £180,000-a-week at the Etihad, and his pay rise would lift him behind only Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland as the joint-third highest paid player at the club.

The salary folds out at €50m over the duration of his existing five-year contract at the Etihad, which has three more years left to run.

While Rodri's Man City future seems secure, the same can't be said for a number of players at the Etihad this summer, with Phillips certain to leave, while Jack Grealish's star has waned under Guardiola. Haaland is coveted by Real Madrid, meanwhile, but under lock and key for now.
