Arsenal are interested in re-signing Ismael Bennacer, according to Italian media.

The Algerian midfielder has endured a challenging season at AC Milan. Injured until December, Bennacer only fairly recently returned to Stefano Piolo's squad.

Despite his lengthy spell on the sidelines, the 26-year-old comfortably managed to win back his place at the base of Milan's midfield and he is now once again an important player for the Rossoneri.

However, Milan are plotting a big summer transfer window. With Olivier Giroud looking set to depart for LAFC, the Italian giants are in need of offensive reinforcements. Indeed, Milan have been scouring the striker market for some time.

The problem is that top-quality centre-forwards generally don't come cheap. The Rossoneri need to raise funds and Bennacer has reportedly been earmarked as a player who could flush a sizeable fee into the club's coffers.

Arsenal keen

According to Calciomercato, Bennacer's situation is being keenly tracked by clubs around Europe. Intriguingly, it is asserted Arsenal still think highly of the Algerian despite selling him to Empoli for just €1 million in 2017.

During his two years in north London, Bennacer made just one appearance for the senior team, so one could be forgiven for forgetting that he ever was on the books at Arsenal in the first place. Nevertheless, he could be in line for a sensational return, with the Gunners front of the queue in terms of potential Premier League suitors.

Bennacer reportedly has a €50 million release clause in his deal which runs until 2027. Though a hefty fee, it would make him a cheaper option compared to some of the other defensive midfielders Arsenal have been linked with in recent times, such as Martin Zubimendi and Amadou Onana, who will command at least €60m.
