Harry Maguire could still seal a late move to West Ham this transfer window after talks were opened once again with Manchester United over reviving a deal.

United had previously accepted a bid of £30 million from the Hammers for their former captain but Maguire failed to agree terms over a bonus for his exit.

Maguire had reportedly agreed to a contract worth £120,000-a-week at the London Stadium, a number which was £70,000 less than he was earning at United, prompting the defender to demand a payoff to finalise the transfer.

MO MONEY: Maguire demands huge payoff to make Hammers move

But, while United were willing to offer Maguire £6m, the defender was holding out for double that amount, with a belief that he could command a higher wage by seeing out his contract at Old Trafford and leaving on a free.

United resigned themselves to keeping Maguire and their ideal replacement, Benjamin Pavard, has agreed to sign for Inter, while West Ham went on to sign defender Konstantinos Mavropanos, hinting that the deal was all but over between the two sides.

However, The Sun report that West Ham have returned to the table to sign Maguire and are hopeful a move can be concluded before Friday’s transfer deadline – although they are described as ‘well short’ of being able to secure a deal.

Maguire sale could incite Ten Hag transfers

Maguire’s departure would be a huge coup for United, who have struggled to fund the remainder of their transfer business this summer due to the defender’s reluctance to leave the club.

While Erik ten Hag has spent more than £180m this summer, the United boss is desperate to bring in a midfielder before the end of the month, while he would ideally like a defender, a striker and a backup goalkeeper too.

United were hoping to subsidise their spending through player sales but they have raised just £30m so far, leaving their summer business shorthanded.

BREAKTHROUGH?: United receive boost in Amrabat push

Maguire’s departure would be a welcome one but, even if West Ham were able to push a transfer through, United may struggle to sign a replacement, although Jonny Evans – who has featured for the club in pre-season – is set to be offered a one-year deal.
