Liverpool are back in for Manchester City flop Kalvin Phillips, according to reports.

The midfielder emerged as a shock transfer target for Jurgen Klopp's Reds in July. After losing Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita, Liverpool's midfield department is looking thin, though the big-money signings of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai added some high-quality attacking talent.

With the Reds having missed out on Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia to Chelsea, Wataru Endo recently joined in a surprise move to at least provide some cover in the holding midfield. But this position remains an area of concern for Klopp and sporting director Jorg Schmadtke.

Indeed, Liverpool would be open to adding another player in that department. This fact is now giving rise to renewed reports about the Scousers attempting a swoop for Man City flop Phillips after rumours had grown cold in recent weeks.

Liverpool back in

The 27-year-old has endured a torrid time since making the switch from Leeds last summer, starting just two league games in his debut season at the Etihad.

Liverpool could promise the midfielder regular game time at a crucial juncture in his career. Phillips is in his peak years and needs to play if he wants to recapture the form that once made him such a sought-after commodity.

TEAMtalk reports that the Reds enquired about Phillips and received a 'tempting' response. City would be open to letting the player leave, the report claims. Journalist Alex Nixon, meanwhile, asserts that City are looking to loan the midfielder out in a bid to help him get his career back on track.

TalkSPORT goes a step further and contends that Liverpool are seriously considering making a move for Phillips. Whether the Cityzens would be open to strengthening a potential title rival after doing so to Arsenal last season remains to be seen.
