Chelsea are set to complete a move for RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku in the summer despite the player suffering a long-term injury that has forced him to miss the World Cup.

Nkunku has been sensational for RB Leipzig over the last few seasons, being named the Bundesliga Player of the Season in the last campaign after a fine run of form.

He was expected to move in the summer but extended his deal to remain at the club, however, it seems as though the German club won’t be able to hold on to him any longer.

Now, after months of negotiation it appears the Leipzig have reached an agreement for his move next summer and a transfer is set to be completed.

Nkunku set for Chelsea

According to Le10 Sport, a deal has been agreed for the transfer to be completed on July 1 next year and the Blues are willing to pay his release clause.

Nkunku’s release clause is believed to be at €70 million – a relatively low fee for how much he brings to the Leipzig team – and Chelsea are willing to match that next year.

Despite Nkunku’s injury, which has ruled him out of the World Cup just before the start of the tournament and is set to keep him out of action until February, Chelsea are keen on getting the deal done.

The Blues have struggled in attack over the course of the campaign and feel Nkunku is the ideal player to get them to improve in that area, given his exploits over the last season-and-a-half.

Last season, he scored 35 goals in 52 appearances and he has carried that form into this campaign, netting 16 goals in 21 appearances across all competitions.

Unfortunately for him, he will miss the chance to play at the World Cup in France but will have the opportunity to come back stronger in the second half of the campaign.
