Erik ten Hag is already planning his moves in a long-term transfer revamp of the Manchester United squad

Manchester United are already planning a huge sales push for the summer transfer window of 2023, FootballTransfers understands, with Harry Maguire, Fred and Anthony Martial among those earmarked to leave the club.

Erik ten Hag’s revolution at Old Trafford has gotten off to a rather sluggish start in terms of squad turnover, with the Red Devils so far only managing to secure the services of Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez joining the club.

This is in contrast to a huge number of players who have departed the club, including a clutch of experienced midfielders such as Paul Pogba, Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic. Furthermore, Jesse Lingard and Edinson Cavani have both been released, while Dean Henderson has been loaned out to Nottingham Forest. The only player sold for a fee is Andreas Pereira to Fulham.

With so many players having departed this summer, and Cristiano Ronaldo still pushing to leave the club, the focus at Old Trafford is presently on bolstering the ranks of the first-team squad.

Ten Hag’s long-term plan

There is already a long-term vision in place, however, that will see a far more significant squad overhaul take place in the summer of 2023.

Maguire, who was recently named Ten Hag’s captain, is the most prominent name who is expected to be available for transfer after a thoroughly disappointing 2021/22 season. Similarly, Brazil international Fred is one of those players the club feel they can get a return on, while in-form attacker Anthony Martial is another who is set to be allowed to leave.

Of course, in this case there is scope for change. Should Martial, for example, continue his resurgence under Ten Hag, then it is possible that there is a U-turn in Man Utd’s plans, but their early thinking is that they can get a healthy transfer fee for the likes of him and Maguire as a necessary long-term revamp gathers pace.
