The ex-Ajax man is wanted by his former head coach Erik ten Hag as he begins life at the helm at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag has already added Feyenoord left-back Tyrell Malacia to his squad, but remains set on signing De Jong as he looks to transform the midfield at Man Utd. Christian Eriksen has also reportedly verbally agreed to a move to Old Trafford as the wheels begin turning in regards to the club's transfer business.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has stated that "there’s also a salary issue and that would have to be adjusted" if De Jong were to stay at the club. It's now been revealed that De Jong must agree to a salary reduction or he will be sold to Man Utd.

A report from Marca details how over the remaining four years of De Jong's deal, Barcelona will owe him over €100 million if certain clauses are met.

However, the club would mitigate that if they sell the Dutchman to Man Utd.

The state of play of De Jong to Man Utd

Fabrizio Romano has stated the lay of the field in regards to how De Jong's proposed move to Man Utd has progressed.

Furthermore, personal terms have not yet beem agreed with De Jong, and reports suggest they are yet to even formally begin. However, Man Utd will be buoyed by news that a salary reduction for De Jong at Barcelona is very unlikely.

That means the Blaugrana may be forced to sell, although if De Jong doesn't agree to a wage reduction or a move to Man Utd, then Barcelona will be placed in a tricky situation.
