Aston Villa have announced that Steven Gerrard will be their new manager following the tenure of Dean Smith.

Smith was in charge when the club achieved promotion and then survival in the league, but a run of five straight defeats led to his dismissal.

Aston Villa acted quickly to replace Smith with Gerrard, who has only had one senior managerial role in his career so far.

After working with Liverpool youth squads, Gerrard, who is a legend at the Anfield club due to his exploits as a midfielder during his playing days, was appointed manager of Scottish giants Rangers in May of 2018.

Gerrard's record at Rangers

Gerrard took over Rangers during a particularly unsuccessful period at the club as Celtic were, at that point, the dominant force in Scottish football.

Though he was credited with revitalising the club, he failed to win a trophy in both of his first two seasons with Rangers.

The former Liverpool captain would eventually write his name into the history books of Scottish football, though, as under his management Rangers managed to win the Scottish Premiership in 2020/21.

It was a particularly important victory for Rangers as it was their 55th league crown and it stopped Celtic from claiming a historic 10th title in a row.

Gerrard also enjoyed impressive success in Europe. He twice guided the Gers to the knockout rounds of the Europa League, falling to Bayer Leverkusen in the last 32 in 2020 before being beaten by Slavia Prague in the last 16 a year later.
