Celtic have officially missed out on the signing of Hibernian striker Kieron Bowie to Serie A side Hellas Verona.

Martin O’Neill’s side were among the clubs keeping close tabs on Bowie’s situation ahead of the January transfer window, alongside arch-rivals Rangers, however he has instead opted to become the latest Scotland star to move to Italy.

Bowie has scored nine goals in 30 games for Hibernian so far this season and his form has been rewarded with a €6.9 million move to Hellas Verona, who are currently 19th in the Serie A table and four points from safety.

The Scotland international, who has two senior caps to his name, has travelled to Italy to undergo his medical with Paolo Zanetti’s side, although he is unlikely to make his debut during their Serie A clash against Cagliari on Saturday evening.

With a move for Bowie now off the table, Celtic will be forced to pursue an alternative target if they are to provide O’Neill with a new centre forward to work with for the remainder of the season. Chelsea outcast David Datro Fofana is among the stars on Celtic’s transfer radar and he is believed to be available as the Blues look to offload him before Deadline Day.

Kieron Bowie transfer message

Speaking to Sky Sports Scotland before jetting off to Italy, Bowie said: “I’ve had 18 months at Hibs now and I’ve done extremely well there and they’ve done well for me. So I think for all parties it’s good.

“Obviously Italy appeals now, there’s a lot of people from Scotland that have gone there and done well. It obviously opens up a lot of opportunities for myself and my family, so that’s the main thing.”

When asked if the upcoming World Cup has played a role in his decision to join Hellas Verona, Bowie admitted: “I think so. Obviously it’s a top league, isn’t it? Everyone wants to do as best they can and with the World Cup coming up, I’ve spoken a lot about that over the last couple of months and that’s the idea [to be selected].”
