Rangers winger Oscar Cortes has admitted that he remains focused on performing for Sporting Gijon, despite rumours suggesting that his loan deal at the club could be cut short during the winter transfer window.

The 22-year-old joined Rangers on a permanent deal from Lens for a fee of €4 million this summer, following an 18-month temporary spell, however he was almost immediately sent on loan to Sporting Gijon in the second division of Spanish football.

Cortes, who has one cap for the Colombia national team, was unable to become a regular in the Rangers first-team last season and he was expected to benefit from significant game time in LaLiga2.

However, the winger has only racked up 263 minutes of action since joining Sporting Gijon on loan on Transfer Deadline Day, and there are concerns that his development has stalled as a result.

Despite this, Cortes is eager to avoid suggesting that he could be recalled by Rangers in January.

“I know I have to train much harder to earn the coach's trust. It doesn't mean I'm not doing a good job day in and day out, but it's the only formula I know: hard work, staying focused, and never losing my attitude,” Cortes admitted to Spanish publication El Comercio.

When asked if Rangers could opt to cut his loan deal at Sporting Gijon short in January, Cortes replied: “I’m calm about that. Every day I’m giving my all in training to improve, and I’m at peace with my situation.

“I’m focused on the team, on what’s happening here, and other things are out of my control. My mindset is to stay here and be with the team. To give my best every day and in every match so I can play. My focus is here, at Sporting, with my teammates.

“God has allowed me to be mentally strong. I am aware that difficult things have happened in these last few weeks, but we continue fighting, we don’t give up, and we hope to start standing out in the team’s game.”
