Ange Postecoglou the 'obvious choice' to become next Celtic manager
Ex-Celtic striker Chris Sutton believes his former club should re-appoint Ange Postecoglou as their new manager following Brendan Rodgers’ shock resignation on Monday evening.
The 52-year-old surprisingly stepped down from his role at Celtic Park following their 3-1 defeat to league leaders Hearts on Sunday afternoon, and Martin O'Neill has been appointed as interim boss alongside former midfielder Shaun Maloney.
While Sutton believes O’Neill will help steady the ship following his return to the Scottish giants, he has urged Celtic to target a deal for Postecoglou.
“I think Ange Postecoglou would be a really smart appointment. He was loved the first time round,” Sutton told Sky Sports.
“His brand of football went down well in Glasgow. He's out of work. I think that would be a pretty obvious choice, a good choice and bring a lot of positivity back to Celtic, which they need right now.”
Ange Postecoglou back to Celtic?
Postecoglou spent two years as Celtic boss from 2021 to 2023 and he guided the club to five trophies, including back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles and a memorable treble in his final campaign.
The Australian was subsequently appointed as Tottenham Hotspur manager and he helped the north London club to Europa League glory in May. However, he was sacked following the conclusion of the 2024-25 season after a 17th place finish in the Premier League.
Postecoglou then replaced Nuno Espirito Santo at Nottingham Forest in September, however he failed to win any of his eight matches in charge at the City Ground and he was fired after just 39 days at the helm.
Despite this, the 60-year-old is currently the runaway bookies’ favourite to be appointed as Rodgers’ permanent replacement at Celtic. Former Bhoys striker Robbie Keane is a possible option too, while ex-Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also features prominently on the list of favourites to replace Rodgers.
