Barcelona make JJ Gabriel transfer decision as Deco breaks silence

Barcelona sporting director Deco has explained his club’s stance on the possibility of signing JJ Gabriel from Manchester United – explaining that the Blaugrana have more to do to “understand” the situation relating to the 15-year-old.

Gabriel controversially announced his intention to leave Man Utd, opening up the possibility of signing for a European giant like Barca, Real Madrid, PSG or Bayern Munich on a training contract when he turns 16 on 6 October.

For the moment, Barcelona’s bitter rivals Real Madrid are thought to lead the way for the youngster, but though Deco did not want to get drawn into specifics, it is a situation that his side are attentive to.

“It is a matter in which we are not involved because, above all, we must understand all the circumstances before trying to do something or talk about players who are teenagers,” he explained to AS.

“It is usual that certain players are always linked to us; there are great interests involved. Even if they are young, we are not interested in any player. As for his situation, I'm not sure what happened. He's still a Manchester United player.”

Barcelona ‘pushing’ to sign Man Utd wonderkid

Previous reports from Sport claimed that Deco is ‘pushing’ to sign Gabriel from Man Utd and ‘taking him away’ from Real Madrid.

The attacker’s entourage has, it is stated, made it clear that the teenage forward’s priority is to sign with one of the big two Spanish clubs, though previously it had been announced that Real Madrid were the side in command.

Gabriel’s family were in Barcelona recently to meet with agent Ali Barat, which is seen as a potential game-changing decision for the Blaugrana. While the Iranian has a strong relationship with both Clasico clubs, he is close to becoming Raphinha’s new agent in a move that is set to strengthen his relations with Barcelona.

While Real Madrid may be willing to offer a stronger economic package, Barca’s lure is set to come from the pathway to the first team that they are prepared to offer.

The loophole that could take JJ Gabriel from Man Utd to Real Madrid or Barcelona

FIFA’s laws pertaining to the transfer of minors (players under the age of 18) are clear: they are not allowed to move abroad except in exceptional circumstances. Typically, these are non-sporting reasons.

International transfers of minors are strictly prohibited unless they fall into a handful of exceptional circumstances, including:

Parental relocation – for a job change, for example.

European transfers – players aged between 16 and 18 can move within the EU and European Economic Area providing the club provides schooling, housing and training.

Border rule – the player lives within 50km of a national border and the signing club is also within 50km of the border.

Humanitarian reasons – there are rare examples of refugee circumstances allowing a transfer, though these are not driven by footballing reasons.

Born in Enfield, England and an international at U17 level for the Three Lions, Gabriel would not initially appear to fit the bill for any of these factors, but that is not strictly the case.

His father is twice-capped Republic of Ireland international Joe O'Cearuill and a Cypriot mother, Gabriel is eligible to receive a passport for either Ireland or Cyprus. This would make him an EU citizen and, therefore, eligible to move within the European Economic Area once he turns 16, which he will do on 6 October.

In turn, this opens the door to a move to some of the biggest clubs in the world, with Barcelona and Real Madrid just two of the sides targeting Gabriel.
