Derek Cornelius given ‘unique’ Glasgow advice ahead of Rangers move and told to 'suck it up'
Canada men’s national team star Derek Cornelius revealed he consulted compatriot Scott Arfield before joining Rangers at the end of the summer transfer window, and now the Falkirk star has revealed what he said in response.
Cornelius has hooked up with the Glasgow side on loan from Ligue 1 club Marseille and the 27-year-old has found himself thrust into the starting XI of a club in crisis.
The former Vancouver Whitecaps star featured in Rangers’ Europa League opener against Gent on Thursday, a match in which they suffered a 1-0 loss.
Speaking prior to that game, Arfield was asked by TNT Sports about his discussion with Cornelius that wound up with the Canada star moving to Glasgow.
“I can't tell you that! He's here! I did my part! I'm going to see him after this game,” Arfield said when quizzed about what he said.
“The one thing I told him is that he can be the best player in the world, but this is a unique city and you need to suck this place up. You need to carry it and deal with this city.”
Cornelius has ‘everything to be a top player’ - Arfield
Arfield also commented on the attributes that Rangers fans can expect to see from Cornelius as the season goes on.
The 36-year-old midfield veteran explained: “He's so calm. You'll see that. There will be times when the fans will be thinking: 'This guy is so laid back.' It's just the way he plays.
“He's got lovely balance, and he'll give Rangers lovely balance. He's played in a back three with Canada, he's played as a left-back in a four, and he's playing here as a left centre-back. So he's got flexibility. He's got everything to be a top player.”
Cornelius has featured three times for his new club and is expected to start Sunday’s Scottish Premiership clash with Livingston.
