Celtic AGREE €1.5m deal for Australian winger after suprising twist
Celtic have reached an agreement with Rapid Vienna for the permanent transfer of Marco Tilio after renegotiating their original deal.
The Australian winger has been on the books at Parkhead since January 2023, but Tilio has failed to carry his A-League form over into European and Scottish football.
To date, the 23-year-old has made a measly two appearances for Celtic in competitive matches, with the tricky attacker last pulling on the club's famous green and white in December 2023.
Tilio spent the past 18 months on loan at his former club Melbourne City, where he netted six goals and provided five assists in 24 matches. He returned to Glasgow earlier this summer, but it has been clear for some time that his days at Celtic Park are numbered.
Indeed, Austrian Bundesliga side Rapid Vienna recently negotiated a deal with the Hoops to take Tilio on loan for the upcoming season. This move would have become permanent for around €1.5 million next summer.
Tilio set for Rapid move - permanently
However, according to Sky Sports, the reason why this transfer hasn't been announced yet is that Celtic had a change of heart and have sought to renegotiate the deal.
The Scottish champions have come to the decision that they do not want to use up one of their limited international loan spots on Tilio and have therefore requested a permanent deal.
Given that Rapid would have signed Tilio next summer anyway due to an obligation in his loan agreement, they have accepted Celtic's decision. The Austrian side will pay €1.5m for Tilio this summer to sign him permanently instead of initially bringing him on loan.
A formal agreement between the two clubs has been reached, and it is a good deal for both sides. Tilio won't take up one of Celtic's loan spots, while Rapid will not have to pay the €400,000 loan fee that had originally been negotiated.
