Next Rangers manager: Gerrard leads four-man shortlist after Ancelotti decision

Rangers have drawn up a four-man shortlist to become the next manager of the Ibrox club, with Steven Gerrard heading the field.
The Gers are seeking a replacement for Philippe Clement, who was sacked in February. Barry Ferguson was placed in interim charge but is not expected to take the reins on a permanent basis.
TalkSport has now revealed that there are four leading candidates to take over at Ibrox.

Gerrard is considered to be the frontrunner for the post, having previously taken charge of the club for three years, during which he briefly took Celtic’s Premiership crown from them.
The Liverpool legend has been out of work since departing Al Ettifaq in January, while he has also worked with Aston Villa since departing Rangers in November 2021.
Davide Ancelotti had been an early frontrunner to become next Rangers manager but dropped out of the race when he decided that he wanted to continue working with father Carlo as he begins the task of leading Brazil to World Cup 2028.
Nevertheless, TalkSport claims that he remains a possibility to make a move to Ibrox, indicating that he might finally be ready to step out of the shadow of his legendary dad.
Former Southampton boss Russell Martin and ex-Luton Town manager Nathan Jones complete the Gers’ shortlist.
Previously, they had also sounded out former Lens head coach Will Still over the position but he appears destined to move to Southampton, which is an agreement that he is set to make because of personal reasons.

What have Rangers said?
Rangers have yet to make any comment on the identity of their new manager.
CEO Patrick Stewart said: “The search for our new head coach is progressing well, and we look forward to concluding our process in the coming period.”
The Gers finished second in the Scottish Premiership, a distant 15 points behind eventual champions Celtic, highlighting the difficult task that lies ahead for their future manager.
