Rangers have received their biggest suggestion to date that Davide Ancelotti will step into Barry Ferguson’s place in the Ibrox dugout thanks to the completion of a spectacular €30 million transfer.

The Gers have endured a frustrating campaign that saw a strong Europa League run offset by a woeful domestic performance.

First Philippe Clement and then interim manager Barry Ferguson have struggled to lift Rangers to their expected heights, forcing the board to seek a new boss ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Ancelotti appears to be the man in pole position, particularly following news of a €30m transfer thousands of miles away.

Cesc Fabregas pushes Ancelotti to Rangers

One of the main threats that Rangers faced to landing Ancelotti, son of the legendary Carlo and currently a coach at Real Madrid, was that he could be lured away by the promise of big-spending Serie A side Como.

Although Cesc Fabregas has done a terrific job in Italy, he appeared ready to vacate the club after emerging as a strong candidate to replace Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen. Alonso, meanwhile, is destined to replace Ancelotti Sr at Real Madrid.

Fabregas, though, has turned down the chance to join B04, according to Sky Sport Italia.

Although the Arsenal and Barcelona legend will not be handed a contract extension – he is already tied to Como until 2028 – he will be handed additional powers in the transfer market.

He has already exercised these to secure a permanent move for Maximo Perrone from Manchester City worth €30m, the Manchester Evening News states.

This deal represents a show of faith from Como towards Fabregas and one that will be reciprocated by the Spaniard choosing to stay put with the quickly improving Serie A outfit.

As such, there is no prospect of Ancelotti turning down Rangers to move to Italy, leaving the Ibrox door wide open for him to take up his first senior managerial post.
