Manchester United have not yet given up on signing Viktor Gyokeres despite reports that Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign the Sporting CP striker.

The Swedish sharpshooter is one of the most in-demand players this summer after claiming successive Portuguese league titles, all the while scoring bucketloads of goals.

In 101 games for Sporting CP, Gyokeres has netted a scarcely believable 96 goals and provided 28 assists. The 26-year-old will suit up in the Lisbon side's black and green for the final time when they take on rivals Benfica in the Portuguese cup final on May 25.

Gyokeres is fully expected to leave Portugal in the upcoming window, and Sporting have agreed to let him go for around €70 million, a significant reduction from his €100m release clause.

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is pushing for Gyokeres as a priority reinforcement, and on Tuesday, reports in Portugal claimed that the Gunners had managed to reach an agreement to sign the Swede.

Man Utd still in for Gyokeres

Be that as it may, his other big suitors, Man Utd, clearly have not yet given up on their chances of landing Ruben Amorim's former protégé. In fact, both Fabrizio Romano and L'Equipe report that the Red Devils remain in the picture for the prolific forward.

The latter claims that Man Utd will 'accelerate' their pursuit of Gyokeres after Wednesday's Europa League final with Tottenham. If the Old Trafford club claim victory, they will qualify for the Champions League and become a massively more attractive destination for the Sporting star.

Contrary to the reports coming out of Portugal, the French outlet asserts that Gyokeres' suitors are moving 'slower' than the player and his camp expected, suggesting that Arsenal have not yet managed to formally strike a deal.

This, in turn, works in Man Utd's favour as it gives them time to finish their season on a high and make their project more appealing - or so they hope. Whether they will ultimately be successful in this endeavour remains to be seen.
