Chelsea are reportedly set to step up their chase for a striker in January after another poor result which has left Enzo Maresca scrambling to save his side’s season.

The Blues appeared to be in a strong position after beating Barcelona last month and securing a significant point against league leaders Arsenal but they have failed to win in their three subsequent matches with poor performances to match.

Having lost 3-1 to newly-promoted Leeds last week followed by a goalless draw against Bournemouth, Maresca’s side suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss to Atalanta in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Although Joao Pedro found the back of the net in Italy, the Brazilian has scored just three times in his last 16 appearances, while Chelsea have failed to score more than one goal in a game in their last four matches.

With the goals seemingly drying up for Chelsea and amid a long-term injury to Liam Delap, Maresca is set to turn to the transfer market to try and change his side’s fortunes.

And, according to CaughtOffside, the Blues are ‘leading the chase’ for one of Europe’s most prolific forwards this season in the hopes that they can find a quick solution to a growing problem.

Maresca keen for Chelsea to sign Panichelli from affiliate club Strasbourg

Chelsea are among the teams said to be chasing Strasbourg hot-shot Joaquin Panichelli after his blistering start to the season which has seen the Argentine striker score nine times in 15 Ligue 1 matches.

Strasbourg are already set to lose one of their strikers in Emmanuel Emegha to Chelsea next summer and it is claimed that their affiliate side may also move for Panichelli after watching him in action on numerous occasions this season.

Maresca is said to have ‘personally expressed admiration’ for Panichelli’s technical ability and composure in front of goal and Chelsea’s partnership with Strasbourg is set to give them the advantage in any race for his signature.

The likes of Aston Villa, Manchester United and Barcelona have also been credited with an interest but Chelsea’s strong desire to seal a deal could see them secure Panichelli’s signing in January to give Maresca some much-needed firepower in attack for the remainder of the season.
