The Brazil international has less than a year left to run on his contract at the Bernabeu, which set off alarm bells in Madrid and had Premier League champions Arsenal ready to go all in on a bid for the player.

While there was always an agreement that Real Madrid and Vini wanted to continue together, there were serious doubts raised over the prospect due to the protracted nature of the contract talks.

Vini had grown unsettled in the Spanish capital since the arrival of Kylian Mbappe. Not only does the France star have a better contract than the 26-year-old, but the club have also pushed his profile to make him the face of the team.

The former Flamengo man has fought for parity, and while it appears that he has not found that, the indications are that he has ultimately reached an agreement with Real Madrid that will allow him to remain at the club.

Real Madrid have ‘huge confidence’ in Vini Jr contract talks – Romano

“After a face-to-face meeting today in Madrid between Vinicius Jr, his representatives from Roc Nation and the Real Madrid board, the agreement for Vinicius Jr to stay at Real Madrid and sign a new contract is getting really close. Vinicius is now increasingly close to staying at Real Madrid and signing a new deal,” Fabrizio Romano told his YouTube channel.

“There is huge confidence from Real Madrid. The club now want a final and definitive answer from Vinicius in the next few hours. They never wanted this to become a long saga and have always pushed for a quick resolution.

“The optimism is shared by Real Madrid, Vinicius himself and his representatives. The agreement over a new contract is now very close.

“Before we can say the story is over, we still have to wait for Vinicius to officially tell Real Madrid that he accepts the proposal. But today the club arrived with an improved offer. The guaranteed net salary is higher than €22 million and it is a long-term contract. The proposal is on a higher level than many of the rumours suggested in recent weeks.

“I have always said that the priority was for Vinicius and Real Madrid to clarify the situation, because staying at the club has always been his priority. Now the discussions are entering the final stages. The player, the club and his agents are all optimistic.

“I can also tell you that manager Joao Mourinho has been involved in the process. According to my information, he has pushed for Vinicius Jr to remain at Real Madrid and has shared very positive feedback with the board. The feeling is now extremely optimistic on both sides.

“We now wait for the player's final approval, but today's breaking news is that Vinicius Jr is getting closer to signing a new contract at Real Madrid.”

Vini Jr’s renewal is not done – Madrid media

Generally the Madrid media have been the most bullish about Vini remaining with Los Blancos, but it is notably more restrained than Romano following the latest round of talks.

“There is still no agreement and the situation is still awkward,” Marca reports. “But today’s progress is considered very significant.”

AS reports that Real Madrid expected a quick answer from Vinicius over their latest offer, which it reports to be worth €20m per season before bonuses.

In the meantime, Vini Jr took the unusual step of deleting all images on his Instagram account in aa curious move that only adds to the mystery surrounding him.
