Jurgen Klopp issues official response to Real Madrid interest
Liverpool legend Jurgen Klopp has dismissed speculation that he could become the new Real Madrid manager this summer as “nonsense.”
The 58-year-old is currently Head of Global Soccer for the Red Bull Group, but rumours have suggested that he is set to step down from his role following the conclusion of the 2025-26 season ahead of a potential return to management.
Klopp hasn’t been a head coach since resigning as Liverpool boss in 2024, however reports in the Spanish press have hinted that he is Real Madrid’s dream candidate for the manager role following the departure of Xabi Alonso earlier this year.
Former Los Blancos defender Alvaro Arbeloa has been in interim charge since January and although he has overseen an upturn in results in recent weeks, the Real Madrid hierarchy remain keen on appointing a new permanent head coach this summer.
Klopp has been earmarked as a primary candidate for the job and widespread reports have suggested that he is open to completing a blockbuster move to the Bernabeu this summer as he eyes a possible return to management in 2026-27.
However, the former Liverpool boss has now poured cold water on such reports.
Jurgen Klopp plays down Real Madrid speculation
Speaking to reporters at the Magenta TV World Cup team presentation in Munich, Klopp said (via BBC Sport): “If Real Madrid had phoned, we would have heard about it by now.
“But that's all nonsense. They haven't called even once, not once. My agent is there, you can ask him. They haven't called him either.
“Right now I'm not thinking about that, luckily there's no reason to. For my age I'm quite advanced in life, but as a coach I'm not completely finished. I haven't reached retirement age.
“Who knows what will happen in the coming years? But there's nothing planned.”
