The 23-year-old was expected to leave San Mames this summer, amid significant interest from both Arsenal and Barcelona, but he ultimately decided to reject a transfer away in favour of signing a lucrative new contract at Athletic Club.

The Spain international’s new deal at the club isn’t due to expire until 2035 and it’s believed that he is unlikely to push for a transfer after signing a 10-year contract in late June. However, Liverpool have now re-emerged as possible suitors.

That is according to Spanish outlet Fichajes, who claim that Arne Slot’s side plan to approach Athletic Club with a €75 million offer next year.

It’s believed that Williams’ new contract includes a release clause worth around €90m, but Liverpool are confident that an agreement for a reduced fee may be possible due to his injury troubles so far this season.

The 23-year-old has only made four appearances across all competitions this term due to a groin problem and he was excluded from the Spain squad for the October international break as a result.

Nico Williams to Liverpool?

Fichajes state that a move to Liverpool is not impossible, although a transfer will be “complex” due to Williams’ current contractual situation at Athletic Club.

The Reds reportedly view him as a dream transfer target as they look to add him to a forward line that already includes the likes of Mohamed Salah, Hugo Ekitike, Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Cody Gakpo.

Furthermore, Liverpool are said to be eager to finalise a deal before the 2026 World Cup as they believe Williams’ value could “skyrocket” at the tournament.

Barcelona are also likely to battle for Williams’ signature after failing to land him this summer, although they may instead opt to purchase Marcus Rashford on a permanent deal following an encouraging start to his loan spell from Manchester United.
