Kylian Mbappe stands to lose €100 million if he sees out his PSG contract and joins Real Madrid - or any other team - on a free transfer.

That is according to The Times, which reports that Mbappe has made a verbal agreement with PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi promising to sign a new contract.

Should Mbappe end up not signing this promised deal, he would rescind his rights to €100mn worth of loyalty bonuses.

A massive loyalty and signing-on bonus was granted to Mbappe when he agreed to renew with PSG in 2022.

The Times adds that Mbappe’s new deal could end up being a multi-year deal, although a minimum fee release clause should be included.

In news that broke last weekend, it was revealed that Mbappe had decided to sign a new contract at PSG.

That means that Mbappe will almost certainly not be joining Real Madrid this summer.

Mbappe had been frozen out of the PSG squad in recent weeks and made to train with transfer listed players.

The attacker has now been reintegrated into the squad and he scored on his first appearance back on Saturday in a 1-1 draw at Toulouse.

It remains to be seen what impact this development will have on Mbappe still signing for Madrid in 2024 but it means he will not go for a free transfer without a huge financial penalty.

Mbappe has rejected numerous contract offers from PSG this year. This all resulted in Mbappe and PSG having a very public falling-out.

Earlier this summer, Mbappe told PSG that he didn’t intend to trigger the option in his current contract - which expires in 2024 - of extending by a further year.

Mbappe notified PSG in a written letter, which immediately sparked reports that the attacker will make his long-expected transfer to Real Madrid this summer.

However, Mbappe stressed that he planned to see out the final year of his PSG contract and would not leave in 2023.

Mbappe to sign new contract

This sparked a furious reaction from PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who publicly made it clear that Mbappe would not be allowed to run down his contract.

Indeed, PSG planned to sell Mbappe this summer if he didn’t renew.

It now appears Mbappe will indeed sign a new deal.

This is the second time Mbappe will have signed a new PSG contract instead of joining Madrid.

Throughout the 2021-22 season, it had been unanimously accepted that he would sign for Madrid on a Bosman transfer when his previous PSG contract expired.

But, in a shock twist, Mbappe decided to sign a new deal at PSG.

It was thought that the new deal at PSG ran until 2025 but it has since been revealed it actually expires in 2024, with the now-expired option of a further year.
