Bellingham transfer ‘regret’ as midfielder fails to meet Real Madrid star expectations
Dortmund are reportedly ‘regretting’ the transfer of Jobe Bellingham, with the youngster having so far failed to match their ambitions of reaching the heights of his brother Jude.
The German side spent €30 million to sign Bellingham from Sunderland in the summer but the 20-year-old has failed to provide a goal or assist in 13 Bundesliga appearances so far.
Dortmund had hoped Bellingham would repeat the exploits of brother Jude, who had a hugely-impactful stint with the German side before joining Real Madrid in 2023 for €127m.
And, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Jobe’s time at Dortmund has marred by a ‘complicated environment’ which is causing off-the-field problems and internal tensions.
Bellingham is said to have been involved in several incidents which have caused problems at the club, while the player’s ‘inner circle’ has been described as ‘toxic’ and led to an erosion of confidence from Dortmund due to his ‘erratic’ behaviour.
Consequently, Dortmund will allegedly not stand in the way of Bellingham’s departure next summer, either permanently or on loan, with an ‘assumption’ that the youngster ‘will never reach the level shown by Jude nor fit into the sporting project’.
Bellingham needs transfer away from Dortmund and ‘constant comparisons’ to Jude
Bellingham had impressed during his two-year stint at Sunderland, scoring 11 times in 85 Championship matches which led to Dortmund winning the race for his signature despite interest from teams such as Manchester United.
However, the ex-Birmingham City player has had to deal with pressure, perhaps unfairly, comparing him to his brother, who has gone onto become a superstar for England and Real Madrid.
The report goes onto suggest that Bellingham needs a more ‘suitable environment’ with less pressure and where he can develop ‘without constant comparisons’.
However, Bellingham’s time at Dortmund is said to have an ‘expiration date’ and the Bundesliga outfit are now hoping to find a resolution to help them recoup their substantial outlay in a player described as ‘one of the major disappointments in recent European football’.
