How much should Arsenal REALLY spend on Tyler Adams in January?

Arsenal may turn their attention towards RB Leipzig midfielder Tyler Adams in January in a bid to bolster Mikel Arteta’s squad.
The London club have done well to turn their form around in the Premier League but will now need to cement that progress with some proper squad depth to ensure the team can go the distance until May.

According to the Sun, Arsenal may look to do that by targeting Adams in the coming transfer window.
The USMNT player apparently has a minimum-fee release clause of £32.25 million and the club may not be afraid to trigger it if they think he is the right man for the job.
But how good is Adams and how much should Arsenal really be spending on a player of his talent and potential?
How good is Tyler Adams?
Since making the move to the Bundesliga in 2019, Adams has certainly shown plenty of promise but has struggled to really lay claim to a regular role in Leipzig’s squad. Which could be in part down to his ability to play a number of positions.
For example, in his first season at the club he played in centre midfield for 10 games then as a right wing-back for a further seven. And last season saw Julian Nagelsmann deploy him as a back-up option in either position in equal measure.
However, under Jesse Marsch this season, Adams has been almost exclusively played as a centre mid and that certainly seems to suit his game. As shown by an impressive performance in the middle of the park during a 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund.
According to Sci Sports, Adams’ current ability is still some way behind that of Granit Xhaka or Thomas Partey, but he certainly has the potential to be better than both players. And could end up being better than both Martin Odegaard, Emile Smith Rowe and Albert Sambi Lokonga too.
As such, if Arsenal are in the market for a midfielder in January and have cash to spend, they could do a lot worse than the RB Leipzig young talent.

How much is he really worth?
Having joined the club in 2019 for just €2.6m and still largely relying upon his potential as a young player, there is certainly a ceiling to Adams’ value at the moment and Arsenal should be wary of spending too much on the young player.
Right now Adams is currently valued at €26m and would likely go for anything between €19m and €32m, with the latter being more likely since RB Leipzig are no strangers to ringing English clubs for all their worth in the market.
However, that’s not to say that Arsenal should go in all guns blazing on Adams quite yet. Like Lokonga or Smith Rowe, Adams is by no means the finished article and even if he was signed for a sizable sum in January, there’s no guarantee that he would be able to add anything to Arteta’s side in the short-term.
