The 10 United States footballers with the highest price tag

Nicholas Hughes
Josh Sargent, Norwich City, 2021/22

Josh Sargent's move to Norwich from Werder Bremen is one of the largest for an American soccer player in the history of the game.

It is reported that the Premier League club have paid €9.5 million for the forward, who scored 11 goals in 70 Bundesliga outings.

Only six Americans have previously moved for more, including Chelsea star Christian Pulisic, who is unsurprisingly the most highly-valued United States player in world football.

But what other American players feature in the top 10?

FootballTransfers' transfer valuations are calculated in collaboration with SciSports, a world-leading football analytics agency that assesses the relative transfer valuations of over 60,000 professional footballers worldwide. SciSports use multiple data points including current and potential ability, contract length, form, age, and other crucial factors.

Pulisic was one of the world’s highest-rated teenagers just a few years ago when he broke through at Borussia Dortmund.

Chelsea won the race to sign ‘Captain America’ in the summer of 2019 for an estimated €64 million. Now 22 years of age, Pulisic hasn’t quite set the Premier League on fire, with our valuation slightly decreased at €55.1m.

Dortmund clearly have a knack for unearthing young American talents, as the second highest-valued player on our list is Black and Yellow sensation Giovanni Reyna.

Recently given the No.7 shirt at the club after Jadon Sancho left for Manchester United, the 18-year-old has already made 47 Bundesliga appearances and is valued at €53.2m on our list.

In third-place is Sergino Dest. The right-back became one of the plethora of young talents to be produced by the Ajax academy, joining Barcelona at the beginning of last season.

Despite initial difficulty at Barca, Dest played 30 times in La Liga and scored two goals. The 20-year-old could be on the way out of the Nou Camp this summer, but according to our calculation he won’t come cheap with a value of €29.6m.

Tyler Adams is the fourth-highest valued United States player, with the RB Leipzig midfielder valued at €23.9m. Despite naturally playing in the middle of the pitch, Adams has often shown his versatility by playing in forward positions and occupying different roles in midfield.

Weston McKennie joined Juventus last summer from Schalke and went on to be one of the shining lights in a difficult season for the Old Lady. His €19.8m valuation is fifth-highest in our list.

How Weston McKennie has settled so well since joining Juventus

In sixth is Sargent of Norwich. The 21-year-old recently broken through in Germany, playing 32 times in the Bundesliga for Werder last season, scoring five goals. The forward has already played 16 times for the USMNT and hit the net five times. He is valued at €13.7m - significantly more than Norwich signed him for,

John Anthony Brooks is the oldest player on the list at 28 years of age, and only player older than 22 in the top 10, with the Wolfsburg defender valued at €9.7m in seventh spot.

Close behind him in eighth comes Brenden Aaronson. The 20-year-old RB Salzburg midfielder is valued at €9.6m, while Bayern Munich’s Chris Richards comes in ninth with a valuation of €9.2m.

Completing the top 10 is Timothy Weah. The son of legendary George Weah, he recently won Ligue 1 with Lille, playing 28 times and scoring three goals. We have him valued at €8.7m.
