The 10 midfielders with the highest price tag in world football

Phil Foden: Should he leave Manchester City?

Phil Foden is the most highly-valued midfielder in world football, but what other defensive, central and attacking midfielders feature in the top 10?

FootballTransfers' transfer valuations are calculated in collaboration with SciSports, a world-leading football analytics agency that assesses the relative transfer valuations of over 60,000 professional footballers worldwide.

SciSports use multiple data points including current and potential ability, contract length, form, age, and other crucial factors.

Our algorithm includes players who could be viewed as midfielders such as Neymar, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jadon Sancho, however, as they are truly recognised as forwards, they will be excluded from our list.

The midfielder with the highest price tag in world football is Manchester City star Phil Foden, who is valued at €99 million.

Foden has developed into one of the most exciting attacking midfielders in Europe under Pep Guardiola and played a key role as they won the Premier League last season.

Manchester United superstar Bruno Fernandes is second on the list. The Portuguese has been a revelation since his move to Old Trafford, quickly becoming their most important attacking player to earn a valuation of €88m.

Jack Grealish is a newcomer since our last list, and moved into third place following his big summer transfer to Man City from Aston Villa. He is valued at €85m.

The midfielder with the fourth highest price tag is Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong at €85m. With Sergio Busquets getting on in years, De Jong represents the future of the Blaugrana's midfield and it would take a hell of an offer for Barca to consider selling him.

Completing the top five is the 2021 Champions League final match-winner Kai Havertz, valued at €80m.

Bayern Munich wonderkid Alphonso Davies is also valued at €80m and, although, he often features at left back for his club, his natural position is further up the field.

Marquinhos is usually deployed as a central defender, though he does feature frequently in midfield, and he is valued at €79m.

David Alaba usually plays at centre back for Real Madrid but remains the most versatile player in world football and he is eighth on the list at €77m.

Casemiro's work at Real Madrid may have been underappreciated over the years, but not at FootballTransfers as he is the ninth-highest valued midfielder at €76m.

Completing the top 10 Dortmund wonderkid Jude Bellingham at €73m.
