Man Utd reach contract agreement with Casemiro
Manchester United have reached an agreement with Casemiro over his contract after speculation surrounding his future.
United had announced in January that Casemiro would leave the club upon the expiry of his contract in June, although the 34-year-old’s impressive form in recent weeks led to calls to make a u-turn over his exit.
Despite captain Bruno Fernandes also suggesting United should keep hold of Casemiro, interim boss Michael Carrick insisted the time is right for the midfielder to move on and pave way for the future despite three goals in his last seven games.
Casemiro has been a key figure for United this season and his upturn in form has emulated United’s turnaround under Carrick but there were fears that the team would have to be without the Brazilian for a part of their run in due to a clause in his contract.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Casemiro’s deal entitles him to a one-year extension if he starts 35 league games in his final season – something he is on course to do if he begins all of their seven remaining matches.
However, an agreement is said to have been reached with Casemiro in January to waive the clause during the talks which led to his summer departure being announced, giving Carrick free use of his star midfielder for the rest of the season.
Man Utd set to pursue big-money midfield signing to replace Casemiro
Casemiro has endured a turbulent time at Old Trafford since his €70 million transfer from Real Madrid in 2022 but the veteran has established himself as a fan favourite in recent times.
The five-time Champions League winner had a positive debut season but went on to struggle under Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim and often proved to be a liability in midfield.
But this season has seen a return to his best for Casemiro, with improved fitness and a more suitable role under Carrick, leading to the Brazil international often proving a threat from set-pieces and linking up well with Fernandes.
Despite his form, United are still pushing forward with plans to allow Casemiro to leave and sign two midfielders in the summer, with Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali and Adam Wharton seen as the top three players to target.
