The most expensive World Cup in history for football fans just got more expensive as the prices of hotel rooms across the United States, Canada and Mexico have spiked ahead of the tournament next summer.

The 2026 World Cup will be the biggest ever with 48 nations set to compete next year in North America - an increase on 32 nations from the previous tournament.

That means an increase in demand for flights, tickets and accommodation.

And, unfortunately for travelling supporters, they'll need to prepare themselves to put their hand in their pocket.

The Athletic reports that the price of a hotel room in North America has increased by, on average, 328% since the World Cup draw was made last Friday.

The cities hosting games at the tournament will be Toronto, Vancouver, Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey, Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, Seattle and San Francisco all the report indicates that the prices for hotel rooms in all these locations have significantly increased.

The Athletic found that one particular hotel room in Mexico City is listed for $157 for May and then, during the tournament, $3,882 on the Marriott Bonvoy app, a 2,373% increase. The investigation was conducted on both the Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors apps.

The average increase in Mexico City is 961% which is more than any other location.

Across the 96 hotels searched, the average per-night rate around an opening game was $1,013, compared to $293 for the same hotels a few weeks earlier.

Three of the top four highest increases were found in Mexico in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey.

The highest increase in the United States came in New York/New Jersey, Houston, Kansas City, Atlanta and San Francisco Bay Area.

As an example, if you want to book a hotel room for the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium, a stay at the Hampton Inn Carlstadt in New Jersey will cost you $3,518 per night.

The Athletic approached both FIFA to ask if they had any plans in place to regulate these hotel prices and Marriott and Hilton to ask how these prices are set but neither responded.

This comes after significant criticism aimed at FIFA for the price of tickets for World Cup matches.

Due to the dynamic pricing system in place, increased demand means increased prices, while secondary ticket vendors are charging thousands of dollars for just group matches.

On the official resale platform, FIFA is claiming a 15% commission on all tickets sold.
