FIFA warned as England fans don't accept full allocation for semi and final of 2026 World Cup
A football supporters group insists that "alarm bells should be ringing" at FIFA after Three Lions supporters did not accept their full seat allocation for the 2026 World Cup semi final and final.
The next edition of the World Cup will take place next summer across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Nations travelling have all been given a small fan allocation for the semi-final and final - should their team reach that stage.
The pricing of World Cup match tickets received criticism from the get-go as organisers implemented dynamic pricing which means demand increases expense. Group stage matches are, on average, three times more expensive that Qatar 2022 while 90% of the tickets available for the final are priced at £3,094 at the least.
"Whilst unsurprisingly the group games are oversubscribed, as well as the possible glamour tie in Mexico City in the round of 16, the numbers for the semi-final and final speak for themselves," Football Supporters' Association's Fans' Embassy said in a statement.
"The numbers are reflective of a fan base that has been priced out, and some of the most loyal supporters of the international game feel completely let down.
"Alarm bells should be ringing whenever participating member allocations, meant for the most loyal fans, are not sold out for any game at a World Cup."
Infantino shrugs off ticket price criticism
Gianni Infantino has claimed that FIFA has received 150 million ticket applications for the 2026 World Cup.
"We have six to seven million tickets on sale and in 15 days we received 150 million ticket requests," the FIFA president said at the World Sports Summit in Dubai on Monday.
"So 10 million ticket requests every single day. It shows how powerful the World Cup is.
"In the almost 100 years of the World Cup, Fifa has sold 44 million tickets in total. So, in two weeks we could have filled 300 years of World Cups. Imagine that. This is absolutely crazy."
The FIFA president also insisted that the money earned from ticket sales will be reinvested in the infrastructure of the game all over the world.
"What's crucial is that the revenues that are generated from this are going back to the game all over the world," he explained.
"Without Fifa there would be no football in 150 countries in the world. There is football because, and thanks to, these revenues we generate with, and from, the World Cup which we reinvest all over the world."
