United States of America president Donald Trump has been awarded the inaugural 'FIFA Peace Prize' at the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington, D.C.

The award was presented to Trump by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who has become a close associate of the US president over the past few years.

Some eyebrows may be raised at this winner due to a number of controversies currently surrounding the 2026 World Cup, which is set to take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The USA's current stance on visas and border control is certainly an issue. Iran, who have qualified for the World Cup, boycotted the draw ceremony after three of the nation's football officials, including the president of the football federation, were denied visas to entry the country.

"Thank you very much, this is one of the great honours of my life. We saved millions and millions of lives," Trump said after receiving the award.

"It’s such an honour to be with Gianni. I’ve known Gianni for so long, he’s done such an incredible job.

"He’s set new records for ticket sales. It’s an awfully nice tribute to you and the game of football or as we call it, soccer. The numbers are beyond what Gianni even thought was possible.

"I want to thank my family, my great First Lady, Melania.

"You’re going to have an event , the likes of which the world has never seen.

"The co-ordination and friendship (between USA, Canada, and Mexico) has been outstanding.

"I want to thank everybody, the world is a much nicer place now.

"The United States, one year ago, wasn’t doing too well, now we’re the hottest country in the world."

The 'FIFA Peace Prize' acknowledges “individuals who have helped to unite people all over the world in peace”.

When the award was announced, a statement from FIFA and Infantino read:

“In an increasingly unsettled and divided world, it’s fundamental to recognise the outstanding contribution of those who work hard to end conflicts and bring people together in a spirit of peace.

“Football stands for peace, and on behalf of the entire global football community, the FIFA Peace Prize — Football Unites the World will recognise the enormous efforts of those individuals who unite people, bringing hope for future generations.”
