Manchester United have been rocked by the news this week that wonderkid attacker JJ Gabriel is pressing to leave the club for pastures new despite being just 15 years old.

The youngster has been mightily impressive in the Man Utd youth teams and he trained with the senior squad not long after turning 15.

So, who is JJ Gabriel, how good can he become, and why does he want to leave Old Trafford?

How good is JJ Gabriel?

The son of former Ireland international Joe O'Cearuill, Gabriel has football in his blood, and it shows. The youngster was born in London and spent time in various elite academies, including at Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham, before joining Man Utd in 2022.

Even before he arrived in the Northwest, Gabriel was an internet sensation. A video of him made the rounds on social media when he was just nine years old, which earned him the nickname 'Kid Messi.'

By age 11, he had secured a sponsorship from Nike, and he extended his cooperation with the outfitter in early 2025. But what makes him so special that he is regarded as the biggest talent in Man Utd's youth ranks?

For one, his ability on the ball is special. Gabriel loves to dribble at opponents with speed, showing excellent ball control and unpredictability. A forward who can also play on the wing, he is clinical when he gets a sight of goal, but not to the point of selfishness.

He is not averse to setting up his teammates and is comfortable combining with those around him. Gabriel can play all over the frontline, either as a lone forward or as a more withdrawn second striker. Alternatively, he can also cut in from the wing.

He also appears to already have a superstar mentality. Even when playing with older age groups, Gabriel has looked a cut above the rest and completely unfazed. He has been a regular for Man Utd's U18s since age 14.

In April 2025, he became the Red Devils' youngest-ever player in that age group and immediately netted a brace in a 13-1 demolition of rivals Leeds. Over the summer, Gabriel was informed that he could have the opportunity to train with the first team during the 2025/26 season.

He didn't have to wait long for his chance. After scoring seven goals in his first six U18 Premier League games of the new campaign, Gabriel was promoted to senior training on 23 October and took part in a full 11v11 game.

Despite being too young to play in the FA Youth Cup, Gabriel is training with the first team. It is an immense show of faith from the Red Devils, who are desperate to tie the wonderkid to the club long-term.

Gabriel and his family were invited to the director's box at Old Trafford for the opening game of the 2025/26 Premier League season, and Wilcox made it clear to the teenager that Man Utd have big plans for him.

"JJ is a fantastic talent. I've enjoyed working with him immensely, getting to know him," under-18 head coach Darren Fletcher said in 2026. "He's a young lad with a massive sort of hype, you know there's a lot of noise around him and deservedly so because he's a real talented kid. He works hard.

"First thing I'd say is he loves football. He loves training, he loves playing, he loves having the ball, he loves expressing himself. He makes fantastic decisions. He's just got an enthusiasm for the game that's just amazing. 15-year-old, a bright future ahead of him.

"I'm super excited by his talent, but the most important thing is that he keeps developing, and he's in the U18 team, and he's doing fantastically well, but he's still got lots to learn.

"The world is his oyster and he just needs to go on his journey and his time will come in due course. But for just now, it's [first-team debut] a little bit early I think, and I think a lot of people would agree with me."

Gabriel has been prolific for United's youth team and he starred for his side in the FA Youth Cup against Oxford in February 2026, scoring an impressive long-range strike after turning away from a defender.

Last week, he scored a hat-trick against Sabah in the UEFA Youth League, having last season become the youngest winner of United’s Jimmy Murphy young-player-of-the-year award.

Before the news circulated that he has asked to leave, it was expected thet he would be included in the squad for Man Utd's League Cup game versus Brighton on Wednesday.

Gabriel represents England at the youth level, but he is also eligible for Ireland due to his father and Cyprus due to his mother.

Why does JJ Gabriel want to leave Man Utd??

According to The Telegraph, Gabriel has "sent a formal notice" to Man Utd to request that his registration be cancelled, which would see him become a free agent. This move, described as "almost unprecedented," has left the Red Devils "shocked."

Numerous clubs, including Real Madrid and Barcelona, were monitoring him in the summer but he was convinced to stay by Wilcox who promised him integration into the first team when he turned 16 in October. A year later, when he turned 17, it was expected that he would sign professional terms.

The club can challenge Gabriel’s request to cancel his registration.

Premier League rules state that: “During your child’s registration period, their registration may only be cancelled if everyone agrees (the club, player and their parent/carer).”

The rules add: “If the parties don’t agree, then any person involved can also ask the Premier League to provide a binding decision on a termination request.”

Neither Gabriel nor his father Joe have explained the reasoning for the request as of yet, but it is a damning indictment of United's current youth system that such a gem wants to leave. This was previously the youth setup that was the envy of every other club in the country.

Normally, at such a young age, Gabriel would not be allowed to move abroad unless there are exceptional circumstances. However, he and his representatives could exploit a loophole that would allow him to sign for Barcelona or Real Madrid, for example.

One source who spoke to The Telegraph exclaimed: “This would be like Barcelona losing Messi before he had played for them. It would be huge.”
