Manchester United boss Michael Carrick has urged the club’s hierarchy to back him in the transfer market before the end of Deadline Day on 1 September.

The Red Devils have spent €102 million on Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Tynan Thompson so far this summer, in addition to the arrival of back-up goalkeeper Karl Darlow on a Bosman deal, but they remain interested in signing further reinforcements before the window slams shut.

Man Utd have earmarked Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall as their primary left-back target, amid their pursuit of a player capable of competing with Luke Shaw, while they are also eager to sign another new midfielder following Manuel Ugarte’s ACL injury at the World Cup.

Rumoured interest in a left winger has died down after confirmation that Marcus Rashford is currently set to be reintegrated into the first-team squad following his loan spell at Barcelona last year, but Carrick wants the club to be ambitious in the market before the summer window closes.

The 45-year-old, who was appointed on a permanent basis in May after a successful temporary spell, guided Man Utd back into the Champions League last season and after missing out on top targets Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, he is aware that further reinforcements are needed.

“We want more, we need more, we keep looking for how we can do that,” Carrick told BBC Sport ahead of Man Utd’s final pre-season friendly versus AC Milan on Saturday.

“Money's money, I get that. We feel like we have to be pushing for everything we're involved in, while being realistic of what the recent history's looked like over a period of time.

“For now, we've got to make the most of it, but we've got to push every boundary we can to be able to win again, basically. That's the challenge.”

Meanwhile, when asked if fans can expect a £100m signing before the window closes, Carrick admitted (via The Evening Standard): “Well that's what we're trying to do.

“A little bit depends on what position that is and what you’ve got and the dynamics you need at certain points. Sometimes you do need that if it’s the right player.

“Again, it’s not purely on money. Obviously over time we need to be pushing to look to enhance the squad. So, yeah, 100% we need to do that.”
