Arsenal move for €80m Bruno Guimaraes alternative - but bad news follows
Arsenal have received another setback in their pursuit of a new midfielder after Bournemouth rejected their advances for Alex Scott, according to the Daily Mail.
Widespread reports understand the Gunners are keen to strengthen in the middle of the park ahead of the 2026-27 season, with several names featuring on their shortlist.
BBC Sport understands Arsenal hold an interest in Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali and Lille’s teen sensation Ayyoub Bouaddi, while The Times claims they also admire West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes.
The Athletic reported last Friday that the Gunners made a verbal offer below €69.5million (£60m) for Bruno Guimaraes, which was rejected by Newcastle United.
And now according to the Mail, Arsenal have failed with an approach to sign Bournemouth star Scott, though the same publication does not mention whether a fee was discussed.
The news comes after The Athletic reported earlier in June that Arsenal were interested in signing the 22-year-old, with a separate report from BBC Sport's Sami Mokbel claiming it could take upwards of €80m (£70m) to land him.
The Athletic claims Bournemouth are keen to tie Scott to a new contract, which could contain a release clause. The former Bristol City man has just two years remaining on his current terms.
Scott has developed a reputation as one of the Premier League’s best midfielders after playing a key role in helping Bournemouth qualify for next season’s Europa League with a sixth-place finish in 2025-26.
He is also poised to make his debut for the England senior team in the near future, having helped the squad prepare for this summer’s World Cup by featuring in a warm-up camp at the start of June.
While Scott’s age and profile differs from other names on Arsenal’s midfield wishlist, The Athletic have reported sporting director Andrea Berta prefers to work on several deals simultaneously before deciding which one to focus on.
BBC Sport understands Arsenal are also keen to sign a right-back and a left-sided forward this summer, with the club holding strong interest in Aston Villa and England star Morgan Rogers.
However, according to The Telegraph, Villa believe Rogers is worth a British record €150m (£130m), with the same outlet claiming it remains to be seen whether Arsenal would be prepared to pay that figure.
Rogers is regarded as one of the Premier League’s best attacking midfielders after an excellent 2025-26 campaign, scoring 14 goals in all competitions as Villa clinched Europa League glory.
The 23-year-old also played a crucial role in helping England qualify for this summer’s World Cup, and he made his first start in the tournament in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Panama in New Jersey.
