Man Utd eye bargain transfer to bring 'dark arts' specialist defender back to England
Manchester United have identified a new target for the summer transfer window who could represent a bargain deal to lead the Red Devils’ defensive restructure.
United are expected to invest heavy in transfers this summer, with Michael Carrick’s side on course to return to the Champions League next season as they sit third in the Premier League with seven games to go.
Attention has already turned to the club’s summer plans and, with two midfielders, a left winger and a left back all high on the agenda, United may need to find a more affordable option if they also wish to add depth at centre-back.
And, according to TEAMtalk, United have turned their attention to Charlie Cresswell as an option after his impressive performances for Ligue 1 side Toulouse.
United are claimed to be ‘emerging as frontrunners’ to sign the 23-year-old this summer and the player is said to be ‘very keen’ on the move to Old Trafford despite interest from Brighton, Crystal Palace and West Ham.
Cresswell is allegedly seen as an ‘affordable and fitting profile’ for United, with Toulouse said to be holding out for an offer of €25-30 million if their star defender is set for a return to English football.
Goalscoring, leadership and ‘dark arts’ – what Charlie Cresswell could bring to Man Utd
Cresswell came through Leeds’ academy but he only made ten appearances for the club before moving to Toulouse in 2024 for €4.5m, where he has shone as a top performer in one of the best defences in Ligue 1.
FootballTransfers chief editor and Ligue 1 expert Robin Bairner believes a move to United would represent a ‘big leap’ for Cresswell but it’s one that the defender has the confidence and mentality to make a success out of it.
“Charlie Cresswell has cut an impressive figure since moving to Ligue 1 side Toulouse from Leeds in the summer of 2024,” Bairner told FootballTransfers. “During that first campaign, he was quickly thrust into an important role in the heart of the defence as Rasmus Nicolaisen, TFC’s top centre-back, suffered an injury that decimated his campaign. Cresswell stood up to the challenge impressively.
“He has grown steadily during his time in France, impressing particularly with his physicality and aerial dominance, something that has been underlined by the fact that he leads Ligue 1 in terms of goals scored by defenders with three.
“Leadership is another quality he has displayed, and he’s not afraid of using the ‘dark arts’ of defending to wind up opponents – although during the Coupe de France semi-final loss against Lens, it went wrong for him as he was mocked by Florian Thauvin, who stuck his tongue out at him after the opening goal.
“It would certainly be a big leap for the fast-talking centre-back to move from Toulouse to Man Utd, but one thing he does not lack is confidence.”
Verdict: one to watch
While United will undoubtedly be scouting many defenders, Cresswell’s status as an English youngster who has proven his ability in the top flight and also available for a relatively-low price will put him high in the club’s thoughts.
With Harry Maguire set to sign a new contract, United know that they can afford to bring in a less-proven option to learn from the England international and eventually succeed him in their backline.
Much will depend on whether United feel Cresswell is ready for the step up but the ball will be in their court knowing that the player is ready to shun interest from elsewhere to prioritise a move to Manchester, giving the club the advantage to explore their options before making a decision.
