Arsenal launch €95m opening bid for attacker
Arsenal have reportedly launched a €95 million offer for Newcastle United attacker Anthony Gordon in a huge statement of intent from Mikel Arteta ahead of the summer transfer window.
FootballTransfers exclusively broke the news of the Gunners’ interest in the Newcastle and England winger last week.
Arteta wants to construct an Arsenal team with an English core and has set his sights on signing Gordon as part of the renovation plan.
Newcastle’s Gordon stance softening?
Arsenal’s need for a left winger has seen Arteta target Gordon, whose form has been mixed with Newcastle this term.
Despite this, the Emirates club are attempting to push through the deal at great speed. According to Fichajes, they are ready to offer up to €95 million in a bid to secure the future of the 25-year-old.
FootballTransfers understands that Newcastle’s stance towards selling Gordon was initially that there was no prospect of a deal. However, this may be softening – especially at the type of price that Arsenal are reportedly willing to offer for the player.
Gordon’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) stands at €51.9m, which is around half of what the Gunners are thought to be ready to bid.
Newcastle, meanwhile, are ready to make two or three significant sales in the summer. Sandro Tonali looks likeliest to move on, while there is noise around Bruno Guimaraes as well as Gordon.
Verdict on Anthony Gordon to Arsenal
According to data analytics firm SciSports’ Career Advice tool, Gordon is a good fit for the Gunners in terms of formation, although there are some concerns over the style of the North London side.
Although he only scores one star in terms of playing time, this is influenced by those players, such as Martinelli, already at the club. Realistically, he will play more than this suggests.
Overall, Gordon gains a Club Fit score of 68 at Arsenal, which is a reasonable but not outstanding score. In reality, with space on the left wing cleared for him to play, he will offer a better fit than this suggests.
He would certainly help to enhance the Gunners’ English core, but Newcastle are expected to be resistant to a deal. An offer of €95m could change everything, though.
