Manchester United’s first piece of transfer business for the summer has been confirmed, with Napoli confirming that they will sign Rasmus Hojlund from the Red Devils in a deal worth €44 million.

Hojlund was one of two major stars loaned out by Man Utd last summer, with the other being Marcus Rashford, who went to Barcelona.

While the Catalan side have announced that no decision will be taken over the England international’s future until the season ends, Napoli have been a good deal more decisive with regards to the Danish hitman.

Hojlund ‘crucial’ at Napoli

Hojlund’s loan deal with Napoli includes a €44m mandatory purchase clause if the team reaches the Champions League, but even if Antonio Conte’s side fall short, their intention is to sign the 23-year-old.

“Rasmus has been crucial even when he hasn’t scored, working tirelessly for the team,” Giovanni Manna, the club’s sporting director, explained in an interview with Sky Sport Italia.

This is the type of stability and long-term planning that attracted Hojlund to sign for Napoli ahead of AC Milan last summer.

Like a younger Lukaku

Manna’s words come amidst a significant downturn in form from Hojlund, who has 13 goals in 35 matches across all competitions this season, including nine in 24 Serie A outings.

Only three of his Serie A goals have come in 2026, yet Conte’s faith in him has been underlined by the fact that he has played almost every possible minute during that run.

Despite this, Lecce head coach Eusebio Di Francesco warned his side of the immense threat that Hojlund poses prior to the clubs facing off in Serie on 14 March.

“Hojlund is a younger Lukaku who is even more powerful when he attacks deep. He's a complete player, he makes the difference, and we'll have to try to contain him,” he explained.

A good price for Man Utd?

Man Utd stand to make a sizeable loss on Hojlund, who was bought in a €78m deal from Atalanta in 2023. However, they have already written off half of this figure (€39m), meaning that in accountancy terms at least, they have made a €5m profit.

Meanwhile, his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) currently sits at €55.1m thanks to his strong performances with Napoli, indicating that the Italian club will get good value for the striker.
