Enzo Fernandez clearly wants to leave Chelsea. The Argentina international still has six years remaining on his current contract at Stamford Bridge, but it’s evident that he would like to depart the club this summer.

The 25-year-old arrived in west London in January 2023 as the Premier League’s all-time record signing and he has been one of Chelsea’s most influential players ever since his move from Benfica.

Fernandez has already racked up a whopping 161 appearances for the Blues, registering over 50 goal contributions, and he has been integral under every single manager that has passed through Stamford Bridge over the past three years.

However, he is now clearly fed up with the club’s transfer model and their refusal to build a squad capable of winning now.

Speaking after the club’s 8-2 aggregate loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, Fernandez dropped a major hint that he could depart the club this summer. “I don’t know, there are eight games left and then the FA Cup,” Fernandez said. “Then there's the World Cup, and then we’ll see.”

Fernandez then added further fuel to the fire while on international duty with Argentina. When asked which city he would like to live in, the Chelsea midfielder replied: “I really like Madrid. It’s similar to Buenos Aires.”

Real Madrid want to sign Fernandez and it’s clear that he is pining for Los Blancos. Multiple reports have stated that he dreams of joining the Spanish giants and his comments suggest that he is no longer happy at Chelsea.

While he is one of the Blues’ most important players, and their vice-captain, a sale could actually prove to be a blessing in disguise for a multitude of reasons.

Why Enzo Fernandez exit could be a blessing in disguise

Fernandez pushing to leave Chelsea has reflected extremely poorly on the club’s hierarchy, with their lack of desire to succeed right now being widely slammed by pundits and fans alike.

Selling the Argentina star could therefore prompt BlueCo into changing their controversial current model. Signing future superstars is all well and good if proven experience is also present, and the Chelsea owners may well be learning a valuable lesson that players won’t wait forever to challenge for major honours.

Fernandez’s departure could spark a change at Chelsea, and it’s a change that is very much needed.

Furthermore, the Argentina international clearly isn’t satisfied in west London and that attitude simply isn’t required at a club with aspirations of glory. There is little to suggest that Fernandez has downed tools, but denying him a transfer this summer could be a major mistake if he goes on strike to force through a move.

Such drama would be a nightmare for a club already on the verge of losing the support of their fanbase.

The fee Chelsea may earn through a sale of Fernandez would also be a major boost in their bid to bolster more pressing areas of their first-team squad - with the Blues in desperate need of a new central defender and a new goalkeeper.

Reports indicate that a move for Strasbourg midfielder Valentin Barco is “very close” and although he would be a downgrade on Fernandez right now, he is extremely talented and would still be an excellent addition to Chelsea’s squad.

Romeo Lavia and Andrey Santos are also capable of being deployed in midfield next term, while the emergence of Josh Acheampong at right-back could result in Reece James frequently featuring in the middle of the park too.

Meanwhile, after three seasons together, it’s quite clear that Moises Caicedo and Cole Palmer aren’t best suited to playing alongside Fernandez in a midfield trio, and it's an issue that dates back to Mauricio Pochettino's time in charge.

They simply don’t balance each other particularly well, with Caicedo requiring a more athletic and defensive presence next to him and Palmer requiring complete freedom to roam free in attack.

The trio have performed well at times, but Palmer has frequently been forced to play as a right winger to accommodate Fernandez, with Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior both resorting to this tactic at times, and it hasn’t always worked.

A midfield duo of Fernandez and Caicedo also lacks the positional and defensive awareness required at a big club, and it has regularly resulted in Chelsea being far too easy to play through during their time at the club.

The Blues haven’t beaten Arsenal or Manchester City since Clearlake Capital’s arrival in 2022, and while their midfield doesn’t look like the biggest issue by any means, three years of evidence suggests that Fernandez, Caicedo and Palmer may not be a title-winning trio, despite their own individual quality.

Since the beginning of the 2023-24 season, Chelsea have a 43.2% win rate when Fernandez has played in the Premier League. In a far smaller sample size, granted, their win rate in the English top flight stands at a whopping 83.3% when the Argentina midfielder hasn’t played - securing 10 victories in just 12 games.

His absence from the team likely hasn’t been the only reason behind Chelsea’s success without him, but it suggests they will certainly be able to cope if Fernandez is sold this summer, despite the fact he registered the most goal contributions of any Blues player in 2025.

On face value, losing Fernandez would be a hammer blow to the Chelsea project and that is true. However, reinvesting the money earned through a sale into a player better suited to playing alongside Caicedo and Palmer, in addition to strengthening the rest of the squad, means an exit could be a blessing in disguise.
