'I couldn't understand Ten Hag's treatment of me' claims ex-Man Utd star

One of Manchester United’s former stars has revealed how he ‘couldn’t understand’ his treatment by then-manager Erik ten Hag during a ‘difficult’ career at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag spent two years in charge of United between 2022 and 2024 and, while the Dutchman won two trophies in that time, he was often criticised for the man management of his squad.
West Ham star Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who was eventually sold by Ten Hag after limited gametime, admitted that his initial start to life in Manchester was ‘the lowest I’d ever felt’ and the situation was only exasperated by Ten Hag’s lack of clarity.

“It was difficult when Ten Hag arrived - as soon as he did, he told me I wasn’t in his plans,” Wan-Bissaka told the Daily Mail. “But when I tried to leave, he said he didn’t want me to go. I couldn't understand it. That was tough mentally, because it left me wondering what I was supposed to do next.
“I just kept my head down and told myself to keep training, keep improving, and play my game. Staying motivated was hard though, especially when you’re training without the clear goal of playing.
“But the people around me guided me in the right way and encouraged me to keep going. Eventually things turned around and started to improve. You could say I changed or developed tactically under him, because that was something he wanted.”
Wan-Bissaka backs Carrick for Man Utd job
Wan-Bissaka was signed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for €55 million in 2019 and the right back said that he enjoyed his relationship with the Norwegian despite struggling to settle off-the-pitch.
The 28-year-old detailed how he would travel back to London every day after training in order to see family and friends before Solskjaer was replaced by Ralf Rangnick as manager.
“Obviously, it’s football, every manager has their preferences,” he said. “They might like you or they might not, and that’s just part of the game. When he (Rangnick) came in, it wasn’t the best period for me and there was a lot of criticism around.”
In spite of the dark times, Wan-Bissaka insisted he looks fondly at his time at United and believes that Michael Carrick should be given the manager’s job full-time, having worked with the current boss during his first interim spell in charge.
“He's someone you can trust,” Wan-Bissaka said of Carrick. “He will also trust you back if you buy into him and what he's looking to do. If you trust him, he will trust you.
“He was quite simple in what he wanted from you. The boys were happy with him and the games he had when he was the manager. With him back at the club now, they are in a good place as a team. I think he should be given the full-time role. I think he deserves it.”
