Liverpool have held talks with Mohamed Salah and have come to a firm conclusion of what the Egypt international’s future holds between now and the end of the season.

Salah was dropped to the Liverpool bench late in 2025 amid a poor run of form but hit out at Reds boss Arne Slot for “throwing him under a bus”, while he attacked the club over “broken promises” made to him in the summer.

This led to rumours that the 33-year-old could be sold during the January transfer window, with clubs from the Saudi Pro League still willing to bid for the veteran star.

Mo Salah is staying at Liverpool

Liverpool have taken the decision to retain Salah until the summer after holding talks with the player’s agent during AFCON.

Reds expert James Pearce has unpacked the situation, explaining on The Athletic: “Dialogue between sporting director Richard Hughes and Salah’s representative Ramy Abbas remained open during AFCON.

“Liverpool have always been adamant they had no desire to sell in January as they regarded his spell out of the starting line-up as a temporary measure rather than a sign their long-time talisman has been relegated to the status of squad player.”

What are Liverpool’s plans for Salah?

Salah is set to be a prominent member of the Liverpool squad before the end of the season, Pearce reports.

Alexander Isak’s leg break means that the Reds cannot afford to see their attacking options further cut down, while a season-ending injury to Conor Bradley means that Jeremie Frimpong will be required at right-back and will not tread on Salah’s toes further up the field.

This means that Salah looks like an almost guaranteed starter at Liverpool once more.

Departure still on the horizon

In the long-term, though, there remain major question marks over Salah’s future.

FootballTransfers exclusively revealed last summer that Salah plans to leave the club in 2026, despite signing a new two-year deal a year ago.

This means that a move to the Saudi Pro League remains on the cards, but for the moment, he will be focused on Liverpool.
