Mohamed Salah’s comments after Liverpool drew 3-3 with Leeds United in the Premier League on Saturday left the footballing world stunned.

Salah was left out of Arne Slot’s starting XI for a third successive game when the Reds made the trip to Elland Road, and when he departed the stadium having spent the duration of the match watching from the bench, he was clearly furious.

Speaking in the mixed zone, he said: "I can't believe it, I'm very disappointed. I've done so much for this club. Everyone can see that over the years, especially last season. To be on the bench - I don't know why. I feel like the club is throwing me under the bus. That's how I feel.

"I have said many times before that I have a good relationship with the coach. Suddenly, we don't have a relationship. I don't know why.

“The club made a lot of promises this summer, so far, I've been benched three games in a row. You can't say they've kept their promises.”

Slot has subsequently requested that Salah be disciplined internally by Liverpool, demanding that the Egypt international is dropped by the club for Tuesday’s Champions League meeting with Inter Milan.

Salah enjoys Egypt backing

Salah may not enjoy the backing of the Liverpool manager, but Egypt boss Hossam Hassan has been quick to defend his player as he prepares for AFCON later this month.

“Always a symbol of determination and strength,” the Egypt head coach said.

While Salah’s status at Liverpool is suddenly questioned, there is no doubt that ahead of the continental competition, the 33-year-old remains the most important figure for the Pharaohs.

Egypt will face Jordan, Zimbabwe and South Africa at the tournament in Morocco, in which Salah will be determined to silence his critics.

Will Salah leave Liverpool in January?

Following his outburst, the chances of Salah departing Liverpool in the January transfer window have undoubtedly risen, although it is claimed that he has not requested to leave the club yet.

Offers are expected to come from the Saudi Pro League but also MLS, where San Diego’s Egyptian owner is thought to give them a chance of a surprise deal.

When he does leave Liverpool, though, a move to Saudi looks the logical destination.
