Man Utd linked with shock move for free agent Sergio Ramos
Manchester United could make a shock move for a veteran World Cup winner who could provide some experience and pedigree to Ruben Amorim’s defence.
Only Liverpool have conceded more goals than United out of the teams in the top half of the Premier League but United’s tight financial constraints means they will not prioritise significant resources towards the defence in the upcoming January transfer window.
With the focus likely to be on a midfielder such as Adam Wharton, reports in Spain have claimed that United may turn to former Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos as a short-term addition to their backline.
Ramos confirmed he will leave Mexican side Monterrey when his contract expires at the end of the month but the 39-year-old has not given up hopes of returning to the highest level for one final challenge before retirement.
It is claimed that United have made an approach to sign Ramos in the new year after his impressive performances for Monterrey, although a deal is said to be in the initial stages and a formal offer may still fail to materialise.
However, with Ramos still harbouring a dream of featuring for Spain at next summer’s World Cup, a Premier League switch may give the iconic defender a final shot at securing a fairytale end to his career.
Sergio Ramos: Man Utd’s bargain option to solve defensive crisis?
Although any move for Ramos would be a major surprise given United’s transition towards a new era under Amorim, the Spaniard’s leadership and goalscoring ability would certainly prove an asset for the Red Devils.
United fielded youngster Ayden Heaven and full-backs Luke Shaw and Noussair Mazraoui at centre-back in their most recent fixture, with Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt sidelined with injuries, while Lisandro Martinez remains a long-term absentee.
With United lacking depth in defence and also being unable to spend more money after a €225 million outlay in the summer, a free transfer for Ramos may represent an immediate solution to a growing problem for Amorim.
Ramos has also been linked with a return to Real Madrid in a similar capacity but no move is expected from the La Liga giants, although the veteran is likely to have a number of options to return to Europe in the coming weeks to wind down his illustrious career.
