The Ecuador international was sent off following a VAR review after a dangerous tackle on Mikel Merino, but it was Chelsea who grabbed the first goal of the game when Trevoh Chalobah guided home a Reece James corner in the 48th minute.

The aforementioned Merino subsequently drew Arsenal level by nodding home a Bukayo Saka cross at the back post, however the Gunners were unable to find a winner and were forced to share the spoils with their fierce London rivals.

Furthermore, Arsenal will now be required to pay a £25,000 fine to The Football Association after receiving six yellow cards during the match.

Arsenal set for hefty fine

Although it was Chelsea who received a red card at Stamford Bridge, Arsenal were the main culprits in regards to yellow card offences, with Martin Zubimendi, Cristhian Mosquera, Riccardo Calafiori, Piero Hincapie, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Viktor Gyokeres all booked.

Zubimendi, Calafiori and Lewis-Skelly were cautioned for committing fouls on Chelsea captain James, who deservedly picked up the Man of the Match result, and Mosquera picked up his yellow card after bringing down Joao Pedro.

Meanwhile, Hincapie was booked for an elbow on Chalobah. However, both James and Maresca were keen to point out that Arsenal’s Ecuadorian defender should’ve received a red card for the challenge, with Chalobah forced to ice his face during the half-time break.

Gyokeres picked up the final yellow card of the match after a late challenge on Robert Sanchez inside the six-yard box.

As a result of these indiscretions, Arsenal will face a £25,000 fine from The FA. That punishment is issued to any club who receive six or more yellow cards in a single match.
