Zirkzee silences transfer talk with goal that could save Man Utd career under Amorim
Joshua Zirkzee gave Ruben Amorim a stark reminder of what he can bring to his team by helping Manchester United secure a turnaround win over Crystal Palace and potentially saving his Old Trafford career in the process.
Zirkzee has been strongly linked to leave United in January after playing just 82 minutes of Premier League football in the first three months of the season.
However, the injury to Benjamin Sesko saw Zirkzee brought in from the cold in United’s loss to Everton last week, in which he played the full 90 minutes.
Zirkzee started once again at Selhurst Park on Sunday and scored a goal from a tight angle in the 54th minute to equalise after Jean-Philippe Mateta’s first half penalty gave Palace the lead before Mason Mount's winner nine minutes later.
It was Zirkzee’s first Premier League goal in almost a year to the day after 24 games without scoring and the confidence boost could give the Dutch international the platform to finally kick-start his United career.
With Sesko still set to miss the next few weeks of football, Zirkzee will have further opportunities to impress ahead of the January transfer window as he reaches a crossroads over his future.
Zirkzee set for transfer u-turn after goalscoring comeback
Zirkzee had a dismal debut campaign after his €42.5 million transfer from Bologna last summer, scoring just three Premier League goals in 32 games, and it appeared a foregone conclusion that he would leave United without much objection in January.
The 24-year-old was reluctant to sever ties with United in the summer and was determined to remain patient and prove his worth to the club but his non-existent game time at the start of the season led to interest from Serie A clubs who were keen to bring him back to Italy.
Zirkzee is still hoping to be a part of the Netherlands squad at next summer’s World Cup and he was believed to have resigned himself to leaving United to seek first team minutes.
But a resurgence could be on the card for Zirkzee as well as United, who won for the first time in three games and climb to sixth in the Premier League ahead of a busy festive period of action.
