Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has sent a warning to striker Benjamin Sesko that his place in the starting XI isn’t safe.

Sesko is Man Utd’s sole recognised No.9 but is missing currently due to a knee injury. The Red Devils may lack options available to replace him, but Amorim says that the €76.5 million summer signings is not guaranteed to start when he makes his return, which is forecast to be in December.

The Slovenia international striker has had a difficult start to life at Old Trafford, and Amorim says that he is prepared to be flexible if things aren’t working.

Amorim is thought to be wedded to his favoured 3-4-3 formation, but on DAZN Portugal, he has claimed this is not the case – and that spells troubling news for both Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee, who has struggled for game time under the Portuguese.

Asked if he is prepared to field a more mobile attack with Bryan Mbeumo acting as his centre-forward, the manager said: "We did that against Liverpool. It wasn’t with Bryan Mbeumo, it was with Cunha, and it is an option we have.

Ruben Amorim: I'll change Man Utd tactics if I have to

“Nowadays, not only in the English league but also in the Portuguese league and across all leagues, there is a big variation in how teams build their play. We do not control it fully. We can call it a 4-4-2, but after five minutes it becomes a 4-3-3 or a 3-4-3.

"I am willing to do anything. Contrary to what many people think, I am not fixed on just one idea. I simply start from a base, but it is obvious that we can adapt in future.

“We have already considered that with Bryan, because he is very strong in transitions. I do not think it is his best position, because he prefers to stay hidden and not be so visible. He can attack and be more dangerous on either side, whether on the right or the left, than as a central forward.

“But it is a good option and something I could use in future, as I have already done several times in the past.”

Sesko has only scored two goals in 12 Man Utd appearances.
