Mainoo to Napoli 'revived' as Man Utd 'agree' compromise over January deal
Kobbie Mainoo has received a major update on his future as he fights for game time at Manchester United.
The England midfielder has been pushed to the periphery of Ruben Amorim’s thinking and would appear to stand little chance of additional game time following a strong revival in the fortunes of the Old Trafford club.
Mainoo has played only 228 competitive minutes for the Red Devils this season, with his only start coming in the infamous Carabao Cup loss against Grimsby Town back in August.
Although he pushed for a loan move late in the summer transfer window, the 20-year-old was told to stay with Man Utd as a backup player.
Napoli were one of the clubs interested in signing him prior to Deadline Day, and according to Sky Sport Switzerland, Antonio Conte’s side are poised to make another move for the youngster in January.
Napoli want Mainoo as De Bruyne replacement
Conte wants a new midfielder to compensate for the loss of Kevin De Bruyne due to a serious injury, and the former Chelsea and Tottenham manager has set his sights on Mainoo.
It reports: “The question of a departure is now more than ever on the table for the Red Devils' management.
“Although Manchester United are not considering a permanent transfer for Mainoo, and Napoli's management would like to include an option to allow the Englishman to remain permanently in Naples, a recent meeting between the player's agents and Manchester United has opened the door to a compromise.”
What will the deal look like?
Man Utd could be willing to agree a loan move with a purchase option contingent on Mainoo playing a certain number of matches in the second half of the season.
The Red Devils are said to have indicated that they would prefer to see the England star move abroad rather than play for a Premier League rival.
Mainoo has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €61.3 million, all of which would be considered pure profit in Man Utd’s accounts as he came through the youth academy.
While the feeling of the fans is that they would love to see Mainoo succeed at the club, if he is simply going to sit on the bench under Amorim, the management may see this as an opportunity to complete a move that can lead to signings elsewhere in the squad as the Red Devils continue to bounce back.
