The Blues are riding high after an impressive win over Barcelona in the Champions League in which Marc Cucurella was named player of the match after locking down Lamine Yamal in a 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

Only two players have played more minutes for Chelsea this season than Cucurella and the 27-year-old has emerged as a key player for the club, having initially struggled after his €65 million transfer from Brighton in 2022.

Cucurella penned a six-year contract upon his signing and there had been some doubts over his long-term future after reports that Atletico Madrid were among the teams looking to bring the defender back to Spain.

However, Fabrizio Romano confirmed on YouTube that Cucurella had signed a secret extension with Chelsea back in August, although the length of the deal has not been announced as of yet.

“I can confirm he signed an improved contract at Chelsea in August. It was not publicly announced, but it is done. He is now a big part of the project and a perfect example of what is happening at Chelsea,” Romano said.

Cucurella among the elite after Maresca reversal at Chelsea

Cucurella confirmed himself in August that a new contract was ‘done’, although Chelsea have yet to formally announce the extension and he was branded 'one of the best left-backs in the world' by Blues legend John Terry after his dazzling display against Barcelona.

“I also have to speak about Cucurella, how good was he?," Terry said. "I’m going to put it out there. He is one of the best left-backs in world football at the moment.

“He is everything I want to see in a Chelsea player at the moment, aggression, great one vs one, a threat going forwards, the threat he shows in every aspect of his game is what I love about him as a player.”

Cucurella’s resurgence marks a dramatic turnaround after the left-back had been deemed an expensive flop following poor performances in his debut campaign in West London.

The Spanish international started just 41 league games in his first two seasons with Chelsea and there were reports that he had been offered to clubs as the Blues looked to cut their losses on the deal.

However, Maresca’s arrival saw an uptick in Cucurella’s form and appearances as he missed just two of Chelsea’s Premier League games last season and scored five goals.

Cucurella has also established himself as Spain’s starting left-back after being named in the team of the tournament at Euro 2024, with the expectation that he will star for his country again at next summer’s World Cup.

As the third-oldest player in Maresca’s squad, Cucurella has become integral off the pitch as well as on due to his leadership skills and the once-maligned star is now expected to remain with Chelsea for many years to come.
